Furlan/Numero23

A project by Massimo Furlan, NUMERO23Prod. (Switzerland)
Performed: December 2002 at the Stade de la Pontaise, Lausanne

“I am a second generation Italian immigrant. When I was seven, we moved from Ecublens to Morges. From my window, looking afar, I could see the football fields of the Parc des Sports. Several times a week, at night, one of the fields was illuminated for training or for a match. I would look at these little coloured men move heaven and earth for hours on. I had also received a radio which allowed me to listen to the Italian channels which broadcast live the matches of the championship. In my room, with a small foam ball, I would play the matches of the European Champions League with the Italian teams. I scored extraordinary goals with Juventus or Inter-Milan, with the illuminated fields of the Parc des Sports in the background.

I invented a heroic character, I dreamed of being an artist of football. This dream will never be realized since I am now the age at which football players retire (37) and in my real life I only scored a goal in the 5th league and broke my foot against Allaman III. The stadium of la Pontaise is empty. Jean-Jacques Tillmann, alone in the commentary box with a TV monitor. Me, alone on the field with a uniform of the Squadra Azzurra. Images of World Cup final which only Jean-Jacques Tillmann sees appear on the monitor. He comments them as he has always done. His voice is amplified and the spectators listen, they recognize his voice, this voice which has always told about football and is inscribed in their unconscious. I run on the field, I play the final, there isn’t even a ball, I fall, rise up, run again. Sometimes I exist, appear, dribble in Jean-Jacques Tillmann’s commentary. Reality (the journalist) and fantasy (me) are joined for an instant. The match is broadcast live on the regional TV (TVRL), the performance lasts 90 minutes plus a half-time of 15 minutes.”
